Chapter 19
Jada
The room was silent. She’d been floating in and out of consciousness for days now it seemed, and she could have very well been hearing things wrong. The medication they’d given her to stop the contractions had her shaking uncontrollably. At times it was so hard to focus on anything that someone was saying because of the trembling being so aggravating. But while Candace was sitting on the edge of her hospital bed with that stupid grin on her face Jada wanted nothing more than to steady her hand so that she could reach out and slap the girl, assuming that she’d heard her correctly.
It was Jada’s last day in the hospital. The doctor had said that they would release her in the morning because the contractions had successfully been stopped. She was being placed on bed rest for the next month so she wasn’t exactly out of the woods yet. Right now she just wanted to relax and get her thoughts together while her in-laws were away and Jordan was at work. Candace’s visit would have been a little more welcomed if she hadn’t come with this crazy shit.
“You don’t have nothing to say?” Candace asked her.
Jada lay on her right side and stared out of the window. She couldn’t think of any tactful words to share so she decided to remain quiet.
Candace patted her leg. “Come on, girl. Can I get a congratulations or something?”
Is she kidding? Jada wondered. She continued to stare out of the window. She hadn’t gotten fresh air in days and was excited about getting out of the hospital room.
Candace was growing impatient with her friend. “You okay, girl?”
Jada nodded.
“Then why you not talking to me, chick? I just told you the most important news of my life. and you laying up here like you mute or something.”
“What do you want me to say?” Jada asked.
“Umm, I just told you that congratulations or something like that would be nice.”
“Congratulations,” Jada said without feeling. She hoped that her girl would just let it go now and move on to something else.
“You all dry with it. I’ma let it slide though because I know that you’re going through something right now. But when you get back to you usual upbeat self I expect you to get your party planning skills on and throw me a reception.”
I bet you do, Jada thought. The last thing she was in a position to do was throw a party, especially to celebrate a decision that she found completely ridiculous. It perturbed her that Candace continued to make illogical decisions, then expected everyone around her to pretend that she was the luckiest girl in the world. Jada wasn’t in the mood to play make believe today.
“Anyway, so I rented a small U-Haul to move Rico’s things out of his parents’ place,” Candace said. “So he’s moving into my apartment as we speak. It’s been so long since I’ve lived with a man. I hope he don’t do no crazy stuff, like leave the toilet seat up or leave the cap off the toothpaste.
